Quantum tunneling

Quantum tunneling. Computer model of a quantum wavefunction trapped in a deep well (centre). In classical physics, the particle described by this wavefunction doesn t have enough energy to emerge from the central area (patterned). Quantum theory allows a phenomenon known as quantum tunneling, where it is possible for the particle to tunnel through the barrier and appear in the forbidden region. The blue and red areas outside the central area show how the quantum wavefunction looks very different after tunneling out of the well. This quantum wavefunction is a random wave, an example of quantum chaos. This model was produced as an artwork by Professor Eric Heller

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intriguing concept of quantum tunneling. The computer-generated model depicts a quantum wavefunction trapped within a deep well at its center, symbolizing the classical physics limitation where the particle lacks sufficient energy to escape this central area. However, in the realm of quantum theory, an extraordinary phenomenon called quantum tunneling emerges. It allows particles to defy barriers and appear in forbidden regions. The vibrant blue and red areas surrounding the central well represent how drastically different the quantum wavefunction appears after successfully tunneling out. This random wave pattern exemplifies the chaotic nature of quantum mechanics, beautifully captured as an artwork by Professor Eric Heller. The circular illustration with intricate patterns evokes both artistic expression and scientific research. It serves as a visual representation of theoretical concepts such as barrier hopping and energy escape through tunnels. Through this magnified image, we gain insight into microscopic aspects of particle physics that are otherwise invisible to our naked eye. This thought-provoking print not only highlights the beauty inherent in scientific exploration but also sparks curiosity about subjects like waves, rays, and abstract theories that shape our understanding of reality. Created by Science Photo Library in collaboration with Professor Eric Heller, this artwork seamlessly blends artistry with scientific simulation to offer a glimpse into the fascinating world of quantum phenomena.
