Physics experiment

Physics experiment. Screen display of the output from a physics experiment. The experiment involves monitoring changing position with time. The graph shows the position of an object (given as distance in metres) plotted against time (in seconds). The output is a wave of decreasing amplitude. Motion of this sort is seen in a damped oscillator, such as a mass bouncing on a spring, or the swinging of a pendulum. The gradient of the graph shows the velocity of the object. The velocity is zero at the peaks (the high points of a swinging pendulum) and at a maximum in between (the low point of the swing of a pendulum). Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © ANDREW LAMBERT PHOTOGRAPHY/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures a physics experiment in action, showcasing the screen display of its intriguing output. The experiment revolves around monitoring the changing position of an object over time, as depicted by the graph displayed on the screen. The graph exhibits a wave pattern with decreasing amplitude, characteristic of a damped oscillator phenomenon. The motion observed here resembles that of a mass bouncing on a spring or the swinging motion of a pendulum. By examining the gradient of the graph, one can determine the velocity of the object throughout its movement. At each peak point, representing high points in a swinging pendulum's trajectory, velocity is zero. Conversely, between peaks - at low points in pendulum swing - maximum velocity is achieved. This educational demonstration showcases periodic motion and provides valuable insights into concepts such as amplitude and damped harmonic motion (DHM). It serves as an excellent visual aid for students studying mechanics and oscillation within their physics curriculum. With its precise equipment and meticulous setup within this laboratory setting, this photograph from Science Photo Library exemplifies how science education comes to life inside classrooms worldwide. Its informative nature sparks curiosity while emphasizing practical applications of theoretical knowledge.
