Antihydrogen experiment at CERN
Antimatter experiment in which antihydrogen may be produced for the first time. Antiprotons travel along the large pipe at centre, part of the Low- Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) accelerator. Protons are fired into the path of the antiprotons through the small pipe running left to right at centre. Collisions result in which some electron-positron pairs are created and carried with the antiprotons along the pipe. On rare occasions, a positron may combine with an antiproton to form an atom of anti-hydrogen for a tiny fraction of a second. This experiment at CERN, the European particle physics lab near Geneva, aims to produce the first atoms of anti-hydrogen in late 1995

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the groundbreaking antihydrogen experiment taking place at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva. At the heart of this experiment lies the Low-Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) accelerator, depicted as a large pipe in the center of the image. Within this intricate setup, antiprotons are propelled along their path while protons are fired into their trajectory through a smaller pipe running from left to right. The collisions that occur between these particles give rise to an extraordinary phenomenon: electron-positron pairs are generated and carried alongside the antiprotons within the pipe. However, it is on rare occasions that something truly remarkable happens - a positron combines with an antiproton for just a fleeting moment, forming an atom of anti-hydrogen. The ultimate goal of this ambitious experiment is to achieve what has never been done before - producing atoms of anti-hydrogen for scientific study. The year targeted for this groundbreaking achievement is 1995. As we gaze upon this photograph from Science Photo Library, we witness not only cutting-edge technology but also humanity's insatiable curiosity and relentless pursuit of knowledge. This image serves as a testament to our collective endeavor in unraveling some of nature's most profound mysteries through antimatter research at one of science's most revered institutions – CERN.
