Phoenician coins and writing

Phoenician coins. Engraving depicting various coins and medals from the Phoenician civilisation. Phoenicia existed as a collection of city states in the coastal areas of modern day Lebanon and Syria. Its origins date back to about 2300 BCE (before common era), flourished through maritime trade around 1200-800 BCE and declined from about 500-65 BCE. Their coins were made of gold and were freely traded with other civilisations such as the Greeks. Phoenicia gave rise to a written alphabet (upper line of text), a phonetic alphabet thought to be the origin of all western alphabets. Beneath this is a line in Hebrew. This engraving comes from the Gentlemans Magazine published in 1760

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the rich history of Phoenician civilization through a collection of exquisite coins and medals. Engraved with meticulous detail, these ancient artifacts offer a glimpse into the thriving trade and cultural exchange that characterized Phoenicia during its heyday. Phoenicia, comprised of various city-states along the modern-day Lebanese and Syrian coastlines, emerged around 2300 BCE as a maritime powerhouse. Flourishing between 1200-800 BCE, their gold coins became highly sought-after tender in transactions with civilizations like the Greeks. The upper line of text represents Phoenicia's monumental contribution to human communication: the birth of a written alphabet. This phonetic alphabet is believed to be the precursor to all Western alphabets we use today. Beneath it lies another line inscribed in Hebrew, further exemplifying Phoenicia's influence on language development. Dating back to 1760, this engraving from Gentlemans Magazine captures not only the beauty but also serves as an invaluable historical record. The monochromatic illustration transports us back to the 18th century when scholars marveled at these remarkable relics. Todd-White Art Photography has masterfully captured this vertical composition, emphasizing each coin's intricate details against a pristine white backdrop. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded of Phoenicia's significant contributions to trade, writing systems, and ultimately shaping our modern world through their enduring legacy.
