Phase change material, SEM
Phase change material. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of microcapsules (blue) that contain a phase change material (PCM) coating fabric fibres. The PCM can absorb and release heat generated by a person wearing the fabric, warming or cooling it as required. If the wearers body temperature rises after exercise, the PCM absorbs the heat and melts, preventing heat reflecting back onto the body. If the wearers temperature then falls, the PCM refreezes, releasing its absorbed heat and warming the garment. The PCM can undergo this melting/refreezing cycle almost indefinitely. PCMs are being developed by Outlast Technologies, USA. Magnification unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable capabilities of phase change material (PCM) in fabric fibres. The coloured scanning electron micrograph reveals a network of tiny blue microcapsules that contain PCM, developed by Outlast Technologies in the USA. PCM is a revolutionary technology that enables clothing to regulate body temperature effectively. When worn, the fabric absorbs and releases heat generated by the wearer, adapting to their needs for warmth or cooling. This dynamic process ensures optimal comfort and homeostasis. After physical activity causes an increase in body temperature, the PCM absorbs excess heat and melts, preventing it from reflecting back onto the wearer's body. As the individual's temperature decreases, the PCM refreezes and releases its stored heat, warming up the garment once again. The beauty of this system lies in its ability to undergo this melting/refreezing cycle indefinitely without losing efficacy. By harnessing latent heat properties within PCMs, these fabrics offer unparalleled insulation and regulation capabilities. While this particular image does not mention commercial use explicitly, it exemplifies how science continues to push boundaries in developing innovative materials for various applications such as sportswear or everyday clothing. With advancements like PCM technology at our disposal, we can look forward to garments that actively adapt to our thermal needs while keeping us comfortable throughout any situation.
