EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 16th century, showcasing an exquisite artwork of people engaged in pepper tree cultivation. The black pepper tree, native to southern India, is depicted as a vine that bears fruit known as peppercorns. These dried treasures are widely used for seasoning food. The artwork originates from "Cosmographie universelle" (1575), authored by the renowned French explorer and writer Andre Thevet. This comprehensive book delves into the history and geography of lands explored by Thevet himself. Comprising two volumes and four tomes spanning over 1000 pages divided into 23 books, it serves as a remarkable testament to his travels. In this woodcut from chapter III of book XII, we witness men, women, and children diligently tending to the pepper trees on their farm. It highlights both the historical significance and botanical importance of cultivating such crops during that era.
