Oscillating universe theory, artwork

Oscillating universe theory, artwork. Also called cyclic models, these theories of the origin and nature of the universe postulate that following the Big Bang there is enough mass to reverse the expansion towards a Big Crunch. This is then followed by a rebound and a new cycle of existence. Four previous cycles are shown here before the present one. Within each cycle, there are galaxies and stars. Between each cycle is a singularity. The grid lines represent space-time. Examples of cyclic models are the one proposed by Einstein in 1930. Modern theories rely on concepts such as dark energy and vacuum fluctuations

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork titled "Oscillating Universe Theory" by Claus Lunau offers a visual representation of the concept of cyclic models in cosmology. The theory suggests that after the initial Big Bang, there is enough mass in the universe to reverse its expansion and eventually lead to a Big Crunch. This contraction phase is followed by a rebound, giving rise to a new cycle of existence. In this print, we witness four previous cycles depicted alongside our present one. Each cycle showcases galaxies and stars within it, symbolizing the continuous evolution and transformation of celestial bodies throughout time. The blue background provides an ethereal backdrop against which these cosmic phenomena unfold. The grid lines cutting through space-time emphasize the interconnectedness between different cycles and serve as a reminder of how physical laws govern our universe's behavior. Between each cycle lies a singularity, representing moments where conventional physics may break down or become undefined. While Albert Einstein proposed one such cyclic model back in 1930, modern theories incorporate concepts like dark energy and vacuum fluctuations to explain these oscillations more comprehensively. Lunau's artwork invites us to contemplate the vastness and complexity of our cosmos while highlighting humanity's ongoing quest for understanding its origins and nature. It serves as both an aesthetic delight for astronomy enthusiasts and a thought-provoking piece that sparks curiosity about our place in this ever-expanding yet cyclical universe.
