Mark Measure Measurement Record Topography Ordnance Survey

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an Ordnance Survey benchmark, a remarkable relic of the past in the United Kingdom. These benchmarks were meticulously installed by the Ordnance Survey department across the country to accurately measure height above mean sea level based on the Ordnance Datum Newlyn (ODN). Dating back to the 1920s during the 2nd Geodetic Survey, this particular flush bracket is known as a non-pillar flush bracket and stands as a testament to precision engineering. Standing at an impressive height of 95.298 metres above sea level, it proudly displays a special bracket clipped on to provide a horizontal measuring ledge. While once considered cutting-edge technology, this system has now been largely replaced by GPS methods for determining precise locations and elevations. Nevertheless, this photograph captures not only its historical significance but also its intricate details and craftsmanship. Taken in England, UK, this image transports us back in time and invites us to appreciate both the natural beauty of our surroundings and mankind's ingenuity in mapping and recording our world. It serves as a reminder of how far we have come in terms of technological advancements while honoring those who diligently worked towards accurate measurements that continue to shape our understanding of geography and topography today.
