Optical image of the Small Magellanic Cloud

Small Magellanic Cloud. True-colour optical image of the Small Magellanic Cloud in the constellation Tucana. This is a small irregular satellite galaxy of our own Milky Way which lies around 195, 000 light years from Earth. It contains several large star clusters and powerful nebulae, huge clouds of gas and dust which are thought to be the birthplace of stars. The round bright object at right is the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. This ball of old stars is not associated with the Small Magellanic Cloud. It lies only 20, 000 light years away. This image was produced by digitally combining photographs taken by the UK Schmidt Telescope in blue and red light

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Small Magellanic Cloud, a small irregular satellite galaxy located approximately 195,000 light years away from Earth. Nestled within the constellation Tucana, this celestial wonder is a true marvel to behold. The image reveals a true-color optical representation of the Small Magellanic Cloud, highlighting its intricate details and vibrant hues. Within this galactic masterpiece lie numerous large star clusters and powerful nebulae - colossal clouds of gas and dust that serve as cosmic nurseries for newborn stars. These stellar birthplaces add an ethereal touch to the already awe-inspiring scene. At the right side of the photograph stands out a round bright object known as globular cluster 47 Tucanae. Interestingly, this cluster does not belong to the Small Magellanic Cloud but instead resides only 20,000 light years away from our Milky Way galaxy. The image was skillfully produced by digitally combining photographs taken by the renowned UK Schmidt Telescope in both blue and red light spectrums. Its stunning clarity and precision allow us to appreciate every intricate detail present in this galactic spectacle.
