Optical image of the Perseus double star cluster

Perseus double cluster. True-colour optical image of the Perseus double star cluster. These open star clusters, Chi Persei (NGC 884, centre left) and h Persei (NGC 869, centre right), are believed to be about 15 million years old, young in stellar terms. They lie 7000 light years from Earth in the constellation Perseus. The two clusters are believed to have formed from one cloud of gas and dust, which broke into two halves before star formation took place. They are drifting away from each other in space, and are now around 50 light years apart. This image was produced by digitally combining photographs taken by the Palomar Schmidt Telescope in blue and red light

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Perseus double star cluster. With its true-color optical image, it unveils a stunning celestial spectacle that is both awe-inspiring and scientifically significant. Nestled in the constellation Perseus, these open star clusters, known as Chi Persei (NGC 884) and h Persei (NGC 869), are estimated to be a youthful 15 million years old in stellar terms. Situated approximately 7,000 light years away from Earth, these two clusters originated from a single cloud of gas and dust that eventually split into two halves before giving birth to countless stars. Now drifting apart in space, they find themselves separated by around 50 light years. The Palomar Schmidt Telescope played an instrumental role in capturing this remarkable image by digitally combining photographs taken in blue and red light. Its high-resolution capabilities allow us to witness the intricate details within each cluster's vast expanse. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are reminded of the immense scale and complexity of our universe. It serves as a testament to the continuous evolution and dynamic nature of celestial bodies. This extraordinary snapshot not only fuels our curiosity about distant galaxies but also inspires further exploration into the mysteries of cosmology and stellar formation.
