Optical image of open star cluster NGC 6231

Star cluster NGC 6231. True-colour optical image of the open star cluster NGC 6231 (upper centre) in the constellation Scorpius. This is a dense cluster of young stars in a region known as the " Table of Scorpius". Open star clusters are believed to consist of stars which all formed at around the same time, and from the same large cloud of gas and dust. Most are fairly young, as it is thought that new clusters disperse relatively quickly after their creation. The two bright stars at lower centre are Zeta 1 (right)and Zeta 2 (left) Scorpii. This image was produced by digitally combining photographs taken by the UK Schmidt Telescope in blue and red light

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the open star cluster NGC 6231, located in the constellation Scorpius. Illuminated against a backdrop of deep space, this true-colour optical image reveals a dense congregation of youthful stars known as the "Table of Scorpius". Believed to have originated from a single vast cloud of gas and dust, these stars are thought to have formed simultaneously. Open star clusters like NGC 6231 are typically composed of relatively young stars that disperse over time. In this stunning composition, two prominent celestial bodies steal the spotlight at the lower center: Zeta 1 Scorpii on the right and Zeta 2 Scorpii on the left. Their radiant glow adds an extra layer of brilliance to an already awe-inspiring scene. Crafted by digitally merging photographs taken by the renowned UK Schmidt Telescope in both blue and red light spectrums, this image captures every intricate detail with remarkable precision. The United Kingdom's commitment to scientific exploration is evident through their cutting-edge telescope imagery. As we gaze upon this breathtaking snapshot, we are reminded of our place within a vast cosmos teeming with wonders yet to be discovered. This photograph serves as a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity about our universe and its infinite mysteries.
