Optical image of Mars in the constellation Virgo

Mars. Optical image of the planet Mars (bright orange, centre left) in the constellation Virgo. North is at top. The bright blue/white star to the right of Mars is Spica (Alpha Virginis). Mars is the fourth planet out from the Sun, and takes 687 days to complete one orbit. It appears a reddish colour from Earth as its surface is mainly covered by a red rocky desert. The red colour comes from rust-like compounds formed from the iron-rich soil. Spica is the 16th brightest star in the sky (excluding the Sun). It is a very luminous star which lies around 220 light years away

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an optical image of Mars, the fourth planet from the Sun, located in the constellation Virgo. Positioned towards the center-left of the frame, Mars shines brightly with its distinct orange hue. The celestial beauty of this composition is further enhanced by Spica (Alpha Virginis), a brilliant blue/white star situated to the right of Mars. With its north oriented at the top, this image offers a glimpse into our neighboring planet's fascinating characteristics. Known for its reddish appearance when observed from Earth, Mars owes this vibrant color to its surface predominantly covered by a rocky desert rich in iron compounds that resemble rust-like formations. While we marvel at Mars' allure and proximity within our solar system, it is worth noting that Spica steals some spotlight as well. As one of the brightest stars in our night sky (excluding our own Sun), Spica's luminosity radiates from approximately 220 light years away. Through this remarkable photograph captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of humanity's enduring fascination with distant worlds and their intricate cosmic dance within constellations like Virgo. This visual masterpiece serves as a testament to both scientific exploration and artistic appreciation for these celestial wonders beyond our reach.
