Optical CCD image of Comet DeVico

Comet DeVico. Optical CCD (Charge Coupled Device) image of Comet DeVico. The bright part (at centre left) is the nucleus of the comet whilst the tail stretches to far right. A comet is a ball of ice and dust on an elliptical orbit around the Sun. As it approaches the Sun its surface evapor- ates, releasing a tail of dust and vapour that can reach millions of kilometres in length. The tail always extends away from the Sun, whatever direct- ion the comet is travelling. This is because the dust is swept along by the solar wind, the stream of charged particles coming from the Sun. Photographed in November 1995 with a 35cm tele- scope at the OCA observatory in California, USA

Comet Cometary Comets Cosmology

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning optical CCD image captures the mesmerizing beauty of Comet DeVico, a celestial wonder on its elliptical journey around the Sun. At the center left of the print, we witness the radiant nucleus of this comet, while its magnificent tail gracefully stretches towards the far right. Comets like DeVico are composed of ice and dust, transforming into ethereal spectacles as they approach our star. The intense heat causes their surfaces to evaporate, releasing a captivating trail of dust and vapor that can extend for millions of kilometers. Regardless of its direction in space, a comet's tail always points away from the Sun due to the powerful solar wind—a stream of charged particles emanating from our celestial neighbor. Captured by a 35cm telescope at California's OCA observatory in November 1995, this photograph showcases both scientific precision and artistic brilliance. Its intricate details allow us to marvel at nature's grandeur while deepening our understanding of cometary behavior. As we gaze upon this extraordinary image from Science Photo Library, let us be reminded that comets like DeVico serve as cosmic messengers—carrying secrets about our universe within their icy cores. May it inspire awe and curiosity about these enigmatic wanderers traversing through vast expanses beyond our reach.
