Open stoma on tobacco leaf

False-colour scanning electron micrograph of an open stoma, or pore, on the surface of a leaf of the tobacco plant, Nicotiana tabacum. Stomata are breathing pores scattered over the surface of the leaves, & sometimes the stem, of plants. They regulate the exchange of gases between the leafs interior & the atmosphere. The closing of stomata is a natural response to darkness or drought, & is a means of conserving water. Each pore is controlled by two guard cells, one on each side. When the guard cells are full of water, the pore is open; when they dry out, the pore closes. Magnification: x640 at 6x4.5cm size. JBU colouring: green & yellow. Original is BW print b745/176

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an open stoma, or pore, on the surface of a tobacco leaf. The false-color scanning electron micrograph beautifully captures the intricate details of this vital plant structure. Stomata are essential breathing pores found scattered across leaves and sometimes stems of plants like Nicotiana tabacum. They play a crucial role in regulating gas exchange between the leaf's interior and the atmosphere. In response to darkness or drought, stomata naturally close as a means of conserving water. This adaptive mechanism helps plants survive under challenging conditions by reducing water loss through evaporation. Each pore is controlled by two guard cells positioned on either side. When these guard cells are filled with water, the stoma opens up; conversely, when they dry out, the pore closes shut. The magnified image reveals intricate green and yellow hues that highlight different structures within the stoma's epidermis layer. With a magnification level of x640 at 6x4.5cm size, this photograph allows us to appreciate nature's microscopic wonders. This stunning visual representation from Science Photo Library serves as a reminder of how even seemingly insignificant parts of plants contribute to their overall survival strategies and ecological balance in our natural world.
