Nylon stockings. Nylon stockings in use in a still from the DuPont Companys film A New World Through Chemistry (1940). This film showcased some of the latest advances and everyday applications of chemicals produced by the DuPont Company. Nylon could be worn much thinner than other materials, and still last as long. Nylon was a new material discovered by the DuPont Company in 1935 and used from 1939 in products such as stockings. The nylon yarn was manufactured at the DuPont Companys factor in Seaford, Delaware, USA. Nylon stockings were immensely popular, but had to be discontinued due to nylon being reserved solely for wartime applications

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in fashion history, showcasing the iconic nylon stockings of 1940. Taken from a still in the DuPont Company's film "A New World Through Chemistry" this image highlights the revolutionary nature of nylon and its everyday applications. Nylon stockings were a game-changer, offering unparalleled durability while being much thinner than other materials. Discovered by the DuPont Company in 1935, nylon quickly became a sensation when it was introduced to products like stockings in 1939. The manufacturing process took place at their factory in Seaford, Delaware, USA. However, due to its vital role during World War II for military purposes, nylon had to be discontinued for civilian use. The photograph showcases an American woman elegantly putting on her nylon stocking, demonstrating both the practicality and allure of this new material. With attention to detail and monochrome aesthetics typical of that era, this image provides us with valuable insights into the cultural significance of legwear during that time. Beyond its fashionable appeal, this photo also serves as an educational tool about advancements made through chemistry and polymer science. It offers a glimpse into how chemicals produced by companies like DuPont were transforming everyday life. Preserved by Hagley Archive/Science Photo Library for historical documentation purposes, this print is not just about commercial use but rather represents an important chapter in our collective history where innovation met style with extraordinary results.
