Nostradamuss Magic Mirror

Nostradamuss Magic Mirror. Nostradamus (at right, 1503-1566) was a French physician and astrologer. Here he is using a magic mirror to foretell the future to Catherine de Medicis (1519-1589), Queen of France (at left). The Queen read Nostrodamuss almanacs in 1555, and summoned him to Paris to explain the hints of threats to the royal family. One story says that Nostradamus used a magic mirror to show a series of kings (right) who were deposed by Jesuits (left). This illusion could have been achieved by reflection off another mirror, though it is unlikely that Nostradamus ever used such a magic mirror. Nostradamus later become physician and counsellor to the French royal family. Artwork from The Picture Magazine (volume 111, London, 1894)

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness the enigmatic Nostradamus, renowned French physician and astrologer, engaging in a mystical encounter with Catherine de Medicis, the Queen of France. The year is 1555, and the queen has summoned Nostradamus to Paris seeking his wisdom on potential threats to her royal family. Legend has it that during their meeting, Nostradamus employs a magical mirror to unveil a series of kings who would be overthrown by Jesuits. Although it is unlikely that such a magic mirror existed or was used by Nostradamus himself, this illusionary display captivated both the queen and those who heard tales of its existence. It is said that these prophetic visions were achieved through clever reflections off other mirrors. Nostradamus's reputation as an esteemed physician and counselor to the French royal family only grew stronger after this encounter. His almanacs had already captured Queen Catherine's attention prior to their meeting; she found solace in his predictions about future events. This remarkable artwork from The Picture Magazine (volume 111) transports us back to the 16th century European palace where history intertwines with mysticism. As we gaze upon this colored illustration filled with intrigue and wonderment, we are reminded of Nostradamus's enduring legacy as a prophet whose prophecies continue to fascinate people even today.
