Nose, mouth and throat

Nose, mouth and throat. Cutaway artwork of the anatomy of the nose, mouth and throat. The large nasal cavity (upper centre) is lined with nerves (yellow) branching from the olfactory bulb (above) that leads back to the brain. At the back of the nasal cavity, and also at left of the eye, are two of the facial sinuses (spaces in the bone). In the mouth, teeth are seen embedded in the jaw bones. The roof of the mouth is both bone and soft tissue (the soft palate). When closed, most of the mouth is filled with the tongue. The nose and mouth lead into the pharynx, which splits into the oesophagus (rear) and trachea (front). The top of the trachea is the larynx (voicebox, hole at lower right)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate and fascinating anatomy of the nose, mouth, and throat. The detailed cutaway artwork allows us to explore the inner workings of these essential body parts. At the center, we are drawn to the large nasal cavity with its delicate lining of nerves branching from the olfactory bulb above. These nerves play a crucial role in our sense of smell as they transmit signals back to our brain. Moving towards the mouth, we observe teeth embedded firmly in their jaw bones while simultaneously appreciating the unique composition of both bone and soft tissue that forms the roof of our mouths - known as the soft palate. As we close our mouths, it becomes evident that most of this space is occupied by our versatile tongue. The nose and mouth seamlessly merge into an important junction called the pharynx which then splits into two vital pathways: one leading to our esophagus at its rear for swallowing food and liquids; while at its front lies another critical passage -the trachea- responsible for guiding air into our lungs. Just below this juncture rests another significant feature -the larynx or voicebox- recognizable by its distinct hole located at lower right. This stunning illustration not only highlights a woman's anatomical features but also emphasizes their normality and healthiness. It serves as a reminder of how intricately designed each component within our bodies is, showcasing both beauty and functionality in perfect harmony.
