Northern Somalia & Gulf of Aden from space STS-55

The Horn of Africa. View of northern Somalia and the Gulf of Aden, seen from space. The Somali provinces of Sanaag, Bari and Nugaal are in this image. Two pale valleys are seen: the Dhuudo at centre and the Nugaal at centre left. Both of these valleys have rare seasonal water flows. The tip of Somalia is Cape Guardafui; to the south of this is the small peninsula of Rs Xaafuun, the easternmost point in Africa. To the north of Somalia is the Gulf of Aden. In the far distance are the light desert and dark mountains of Yemen in the south of the Arabian Peninsula. This image was taken by the crew of Shuttle Columbia during Mission STS-55 of 26 April to 6 May 1993

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the breathtaking beauty of Northern Somalia and the Gulf of Aden as seen from space during Mission STS-55. The image captures a vast expanse of land, with prominent features such as the Somali provinces of Sanaag, Bari, and Nugaal visible in stunning detail. Two pale valleys stand out amidst this arid landscape - the Dhuudo at the center and the Nugaal at center left. These valleys are particularly remarkable due to their rare seasonal water flows, which bring life to an otherwise harsh environment. At the tip of Somalia lies Cape Guardafui, while further south we can spot Rs Xaafuun, a small peninsula that marks Africa's easternmost point. To the north stretches the majestic Gulf of Aden. In the distance, one can glimpse Yemen's light desert and dark mountains on the southern edge of Arabia. The significance of this image extends beyond its aesthetic appeal; it serves as a valuable resource for earth scientists studying various aspects related to these regions. This extraordinary snapshot was captured by Shuttle Columbia's crew during their mission from April 26th to May 6th in 1993. Science Photo Library proudly presents this remarkable piece that combines artistry with scientific exploration – showcasing Earth's wonders through stunning imagery without any commercial intent or use.
