Northern lights, Iceland C018 / 2271

Northern lights, or Aurora Borealis, and a full Moon. Auroral displays are caused by interactions between energetic charged particles from the Sun, and the Earths atmosphere. Moving at 400-500 kilometres a second, the charged particles of the solar wind are drawn by Earths magnetic field to the poles, where they collide with gas atoms and molecules, causing them to emit light. Green light is from oxygen atoms. Photographed in Iceland

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Northern lights, also known as Aurora Borealis, in Iceland. The image captures a breathtaking display of vibrant green lights dancing across the night sky, illuminated by a full moon. Auroras are natural phenomena caused by energetic charged particles from the Sun interacting with Earth's atmosphere. Traveling at an astonishing speed of 400-500 kilometers per second, these charged particles are guided by Earth's magnetic field towards the poles. Upon reaching their destination, they collide with gas atoms and molecules in our atmosphere, resulting in a stunning emission of light. The vivid green glow seen in this photograph is produced by oxygen atoms reacting to these collisions. It serves as a testament to nature's awe-inspiring ability to create ethereal spectacles that leave us humbled and captivated. Taken against the backdrop of Iceland's dark and serene night-time landscape, this image transports viewers into a world where astronomical wonders unfold before their eyes. It reminds us of the intricate relationship between our planet and space weather while highlighting the magnetic forces that shape our environment. Photographed by Jeremy Walker for Science Photo Library, this print encapsulates both scientific fascination and artistic appreciation for one of Earth's most enchanting atmospheric phenomena – an everlasting reminder of nature’s extraordinary power and beauty.
