Nomadic jellyfish
Nomadic jellyfish (Rhopilema nomadica) with a scad fish (Alepes djedaba, centre) among its tentacles. Juvenile scads have a commensal relationship with the jellyfish. Although the jellyfish does not receive any apparent advantage from the relationship, the scad is protected from predators. The jellyfish originated in the Indo- Pacific region, but migrated through the Suez canal into the Mediterranean. It is now found in large numbers and has all but driven out the native common jellyfish. The umbrella (centre left) is a common food in the Far East, preserved in salt and softened in water before being eaten. Photographed in the eastern Mediterranean
