Nicolaus Copernicus

Portrait of Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543). Copernicus recognised that the cosmology proposed by Ptolemy over 1000 years before was inadequate to explain the motion of the celestial bodies. He developed in full mathematical detail a new cosmology in which the Sun was at the centre of the Universe with the planets & stars orbiting it in circular orbits (as illustrated in the panel beneath the portrait). Copernicus hesitated to reveal his ideas, but they were published in 1543 in his book De Revolutionibus Orbium Celestium (" On the Revolution of the Heavenly Spheres" ). This colour engraving was made in the 19th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a portrait of the brilliant Polish astronomer, Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543), whose groundbreaking discoveries revolutionized our understanding of the cosmos. In this image, we see Copernicus depicted with an air of wisdom and contemplation, his eyes filled with the spark of curiosity that drove him to challenge centuries-old beliefs. Copernicus's genius lay in his recognition that Ptolemy's cosmology was insufficient to explain the intricate movements of celestial bodies. With meticulous mathematical precision, he developed a new cosmological model where the Sun took center stage as the focal point of our Universe. The planets and stars were portrayed orbiting it in perfect circular paths, as beautifully illustrated in the panel beneath his portrait. Despite harboring doubts about revealing his revolutionary ideas to a world steeped in tradition, Copernicus summoned courage and published his magnum opus "De Revolutionibus Orbium Celestium" (On the Revolution of Heavenly Spheres) in 1543. This monumental work forever altered humanity's perception of its place within the vast expanse above. The color engraving before us is a testament to both Copernicus's enduring legacy and scientific progress itself. Created during the 19th century by Science Photo Library, it captures not only an extraordinary individual but also serves as a reminder that human ingenuity knows no bounds when faced with unraveling nature's mysteries.
