Niaux cave paintings C013 / 7409

Niaux cave paintings. Oil lamp being held up to illuminate cave paintings that are about 13, 000 years old. The original painters are also thought to have used oil-based lamps, which may have generated an illusion of movement when viewed. These paintings show bison, and are part of the Niaux cave paintings in the French Pyrenees. The paintings were done by Cro-Magnon man, an early European culture of modern humans (Homo sapiens sapiens), using black charcoal and manganese. The paintings may have had religious and artistic significance

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Niaux cave paintings, a remarkable glimpse into our ancient past. The image depicts an oil lamp being held up to illuminate these extraordinary artworks that date back approximately 13,000 years. It is believed that the original painters of these masterpieces also used similar oil-based lamps, which may have created a mesmerizing illusion of movement when viewed. The Niaux cave paintings, located in the French Pyrenees, depict majestic bison and are attributed to Cro-Magnon man - one of the earliest European cultures of modern humans. Using black charcoal and manganese as their medium, these talented artists left behind a legacy with both religious and artistic significance. In this photograph, we witness a scientist or researcher carefully inspecting the intricate details of these prehistoric pictographs. The flame from the oil lamp casts an ethereal glow on his hand as he delves into history's mysteries. As we gaze upon this image in awe, it serves as a reminder of our connection to those who came before us. These ancient works provide invaluable insights into our ancestors' lives and offer glimpses into their beliefs and culture during the Paleolithic era. Philippe Psaila's photograph captures not only the beauty but also the profound historical importance contained within these cave walls. It transports us back in time while igniting curiosity about humanity's journey through millennia.
