New Horizons spacecraft at Pluto, artwork C016 / 6381
New Horizons spacecraft at Pluto, artwork. New Horizons launched from Earth on 19 January 2006 and will take 9 years to reach Pluto, arriving mid-2015. It will spend 15 months studying this dwarf planet. Pluto (left), some 6 billion kilometres from the Sun (upper right), has never before been visited by a spacecraft from Earth. It is a small rocky, icy world with a thin atmosphere and a moon called Charon (centre right). The spacecraft will use cameras and scientific equipment to gather data, sending it back to Earth with the large (2.1-metre) dish antenna (white). New Horizons will also travel beyond Pluto to study other objects in the Kuiper Belt

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures the New Horizons spacecraft as it approaches Pluto, a distant and unexplored world in our solar system. Launched from Earth in 2006, this technological marvel embarked on an extraordinary nine-year journey to reach its destination. Now, in mid-2015, it finally arrives at Pluto's doorstep, ready to unveil the secrets of this enigmatic dwarf planet. Pluto, situated some 6 billion kilometers away from the Sun, has never before been visited by a spacecraft from Earth. As we gaze upon this illustration, we witness a small rocky and icy world with a delicate atmosphere and its loyal companion Charon orbiting nearby. The New Horizons spacecraft will utilize its advanced cameras and scientific instruments to gather invaluable data about Pluto's composition and characteristics. With its large dish antenna prominently displayed, this unmanned probe serves as our eyes and ears in the remote depths of space. Not only will it transmit crucial information back to Earth but also venture beyond Pluto to explore other celestial objects within the Kuiper Belt. As we marvel at this remarkable achievement of human engineering and ingenuity, let us embrace the spirit of discovery that drives our exploration into new frontiers. Through projects like New Horizons, NASA continues to push the boundaries of knowledge while unraveling mysteries that have captivated humanity for centuries. This artwork symbolizes not just a single mission but represents mankind's relentless pursuit of understanding our place within the vastness of space.
