Neutron star structure, artwork

Neutron star structure. Artwork of the neutron star at the centre of the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant. A neutron star forms when the core of a dying star collapses into a super-dense state only a few kilometres across. The layers in the cutout region show the crust (orange), the higher density core (red) and the superfluid core (inner red ball). The blue rays are neutrinos that are created as the superfluid forms. This neutron star is 11, 000 light years from Earth, in the constellation Cassiopeia, and formed around 330 years ago. This model was refined using observations made with the orbiting Chandra X-ray Observatory and published in 2011

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the intricate structure of a neutron star, located at the heart of the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant. The image provides a glimpse into the aftermath of a dying star's core collapsing into an incredibly dense state, compressed to just a few kilometers in diameter. Through this cutout representation, we can discern distinct layers within the neutron star. The outermost layer is depicted in vibrant orange, representing the crust that envelops this celestial body. Deeper within lies the higher density core, portrayed in striking red hues. At its very center resides an inner red ball symbolizing the superfluid core where intense energy transformations occur. Brilliant blue rays emanate from this region, signifying neutrinos generated during superfluid formation. Situated approximately 11,000 light years away from Earth within Cassiopeia constellation, this neutron star took shape around 330 years ago as a result of gravitational collapse. To refine our understanding of its composition and characteristics, scientists utilized data collected by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and published their findings in 2011. This awe-inspiring model not only serves as an artistic masterpiece but also represents significant advancements in astrophysics research and our comprehension of stellar evolution. It offers us a window into the enigmatic world of dead stars and sheds light on various states of matter existing under extreme conditions deep within our vast universe.
