Nerve fibre, SEM

Nerve fibres. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of nerve fibres (brown). A group of nerves such as this is known as a fasciculus. The bundle is held together by connective tissue in the form of strands of collagen. Each nerve fibre consists of a nerve cell axon, the output process of a nerve cell, covered in an insulating fatty layer known as a myelin sheath. Myelin isolates the nerve from its surroundings, increasing the speed of nerve transmissions. Nerves collect, interpret and relay information. The fibres are used to pass the information on to other parts of the body, such as the muscles and organs like the brain. Magnification unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate beauty of nerve fibres. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), a group of nerve fibres is depicted in various shades of brown, forming what is known as a fasciculus. The connective tissue, represented by strands of collagen, holds this bundle together. Each individual nerve fibre consists of an axon, which serves as the output process of a nerve cell. Encasing the axon is a myelin sheath, an insulating fatty layer that isolates the nerve from its surroundings. This myelin sheath not only protects the nerve but also enhances the speed at which information travels through it. Nerves play a vital role in collecting, interpreting, and relaying information throughout our bodies. These fibres serve as conduits for passing crucial information to different parts such as muscles and organs like the brain. The magnification used to capture this image remains unknown; however, it allows us to appreciate these microscopic wonders on a grand scale. Such detailed images provide valuable insights into subjects like nervous system anatomy and normal functioning. Science Photo Library has once again delivered an awe-inspiring glimpse into nature's complexity with this magnified SEM photograph. It reminds us of both the fragility and resilience present within our own bodies while showcasing the remarkable beauty hidden within our nervous system.
