Native American tribal dance, artwork
Native American tribal dance. Coloured engraving based on a 16th-century artwork of an Algonquian tribal dance on Roanoke Island on the coast of North Carolina, USA. It is thought the dance was a harvest celebration. The posts are carved with faces, the dancers hold rattles, branches and arrows, and at centre three women embrace and a man and woman clasp hands. This is a colouring of an engraving that was made by De Bry based on a water colour by John White, who settled in the area in 1585. Whites artworks are amongst the earliest surviving images of North America. De Brys engravings, published in 1590, encouraged colonization of North America by Europeans

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a vibrant Native American tribal dance, capturing the essence of an Algonquian harvest celebration on Roanoke Island in North Carolina. The engraving, based on a 16th-century artwork by John White, offers a glimpse into the early days of European settlement in America and stands as one of the earliest surviving images of North America. The scene is filled with rich symbolism and cultural significance. Carved faces adorn the posts surrounding the dancers, while rattles, branches, and arrows are held in their hands. At the center of this ceremonial gathering, three women embrace each other while a man and woman clasp hands in unity. Every aspect of this illustration speaks to the deep-rooted spirituality and reverence for nature that characterized Native American tribal life. It is evident that this festive dance was not only a celebration but also an act of worship and connection with higher powers. The historical context surrounding this image cannot be ignored either. Published by Theodor de Bry in 1590, these engravings played a significant role in encouraging European colonization efforts in North America. Through this remarkable artwork captured by Science Photo Library, we are transported back to an era where rituals intertwined with history and religion shaped the fabric of society. This print serves as both an anthropological treasure and a testament to Native American heritage that continues to inspire us today.
