Naegleria fowleri protozoan, TEM

Naegleria fowleri protozoan. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a Naegleria fowleri protozoan. The nucleus (blue) contains a large nucleolus (brown), in which ribonucleic acid is synthesised. This organism is an opportunistic pathogen of humans, causing meningoencephalitis (inflammation of the brain and its surrounding membranes) when inhaled, often by children swimming in fresh water. Headaches, vomiting, sensory disturbance and a fatal coma may occur if the victim is not treated. Treatment is with antiprotozoal drugs. Magnification: x3300 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the Naegleria fowleri protozoan, a microscopic organism that can have devastating effects on humans. In this coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM), we get a glimpse into the intricate structure of this opportunistic pathogen. The image reveals the nucleus of the protozoan, depicted in striking blue, which houses a prominent nucleolus shown in brown. This nucleolus plays a crucial role in synthesizing ribonucleic acid (RNA). However, behind its seemingly innocuous appearance lies a dangerous creature capable of causing meningoencephalitis – an inflammation of the brain and its surrounding membranes. Naegleria fowleri is often contracted through inhalation when individuals, particularly children swimming in freshwater environments, come into contact with contaminated water sources. If left untreated, victims may experience severe symptoms such as headaches, vomiting, sensory disturbances and ultimately fall into a fatal coma. Thankfully though, treatment options exist for those affected by this parasitic infection. Antiprotozoal drugs are employed to combat the pathogenic nature of Naegleria fowleri and alleviate its detrimental impact on human health. This mesmerizing photograph magnified at x3300 provides us with an up-close look at one of nature's most formidable adversaries. It serves as both a reminder of our vulnerability to infectious diseases and an inspiration for scientists working tirelessly to understand and combat these microscopic threats lurking within our midst.
