N. Dollezhal, Soviet nuclear engineer
Nikolay Antonovich Dollezhal (1899-2000), Soviet nuclear engineer, at a meeting of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Dollezhal participated in the Soviet atomic bomb project from 1946, and later became the chief designer of Soviet nuclear reactors. His reactors included the A and A1 reactors for the atomic bomb project, and then the AM reactor that was used in the first nuclear power plant in 1954. He also designed a reactor for nuclear submarines and pioneered pressurized water reactors. In 1957, the Dollezhal Institute designed the E1 reactor, an early industrial reactor, and later produced the VVER and RBMK reactors. Dollezhal was awarded the title of Hero of Socialist Labour. Photographed in 1967, in Moscow, Russia
