EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of photography and human motion study. Taken by English photographer Eadweard J. Muybridge in the 1870s, this image is part of his pioneering work documenting the motion of animals and humans. In this particular sequence, we witness a male athlete performing an impressive back-flip or back handspring. The consecutive images, numbered from 1 to 9, showcase the fluidity and grace of his movements as he propels himself through the air. Muybridge's groundbreaking research was conducted in Paulo Alto, California, USA, where he utilized high-speed cameras to capture these precise moments. His most famous study involved capturing the galloping motion of horses but extended to include various other subjects such as humans. The photograph belongs to Muybridge's renowned book "The Attitudes of Animals in Motion" published in 1881. It exemplifies his commitment to understanding anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics through photographic experimentation. As we delve into this sepia-toned snapshot from the past, we are transported back to a time when scientific curiosity merged with artistic expression. It serves as a testament to Muybridge's legacy as both an innovator and historian within early photography and biological research.
