Missile sketch by Sergey Korolyov
Missile sketch by the pioneering Soviet rocket scientist Sergei Korolyov (1907-1966). Korolyovs early career was involved with designing aircraft. He was then part of the early Soviet rocket society GIRD in the 1930s. Imprisoned for six years during one of Stalins purges, he was still allowed to work on rocket designs. Released in 1944, he worked on ICBMs (nuclear missiles). In 1953, he proposed the use of rockets for space travel, and in 1957 this led to the launch of Sputnik 1, the worlds first artificial satellite. As the chief Soviet rocket designer, he worked on the Vostok and Voskhod spacecraft programs

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a missile sketch by the pioneering Soviet rocket scientist, Sergei Korolyov. Born in 1907, Korolyov's early career revolved around designing aircraft before he became involved with the early Soviet rocket society GIRD in the 1930s. Despite enduring six years of imprisonment during one of Stalin's purges, he was allowed to continue working on rocket designs. Released in 1944, Korolyov focused his efforts on developing intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) capable of carrying nuclear warheads. However, it was his groundbreaking proposal in 1953 that truly changed the course of history – suggesting rockets for space travel. This visionary idea led to the launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957, marking humanity's first venture into artificial satellite creation. As the chief Soviet rocket designer and instrumental figure behind Vostok and Voskhod spacecraft programs, Korolyov left an indelible mark on technological advancements throughout the twentieth century. His meticulous missile sketch depicted here reflects both his artistic talent and engineering genius. With its monochrome aesthetic and historical significance, this illustration transports us back to a time when space exploration was still an uncharted frontier. It serves as a powerful reminder of how one man's determination can shape our understanding of technology and propel us towards new horizons.
