Mikhail Kalashnikov, Russian gun designer
Mikhail Timofeevich Kalashnikov (born 1919), Russian gun designer. Kalashnikov was working as a mechanic when he was drafted into the Red Army to serve in World War II. After being wounded and invalided home, he began designing guns. In 1947, he designed the AK-47 assault rifle. The designation is short for Avtomat Kalashnikova model 1947, but it is commonly known as the Kalashnikov. Its simple design and ease of use led to it becoming one of the most widely used weapons over the next 60 years. His awards include that of Hero of Socialist Labor, the Order of Lenin, and the Order of St Andrew, Russias highest order of chivalry. Photographed in 1992, in Izhevsk, Republic of Udmurtia, Russia
