EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the enigmatic figure of Michael Maier, a renowned German physician and alchemist of the 17th century. Born in Rendsberg, Holstein, Maier's intellectual journey took him through prestigious institutions such as Rostock, Frankfurt, and Padua for his education. In 1608, he found himself in Prague where he was appointed as the personal physician to Rudolf II. However, it was during his time at the court of James I in England between 1611 and 1616 that Maier truly left an indelible mark on history. Combining his deep knowledge of physiology with a profound understanding of alchemy, he became widely regarded as one of the greatest alchemists of his era. Beyond his scientific pursuits, Michael Maier also held strong religious beliefs as a fervent Lutheran. This led him to become deeply involved in the mystical Rosicrucian movement that swept across Europe during this period. The intricate engraving featured in this print is taken from Symbola aureae by Michael Maier himself. Published in Frankfurt in 1617, it stands as a testament to both his artistic talent and scholarly contributions. Todd-White Art Photography has masterfully captured this historical moment through their lens. The vertical composition adds depth to the image while emphasizing Maier's commanding presence. As we gaze upon this remarkable portrait, we are transported back to an age when science and mysticism intertwined seamlessly under the guidance of brilliant minds
