Medusa. In Greek mythology, Medusa was one of three Gorgon sisters

Medusa. In Greek mythology, Medusa was one of three Gorgon sisters. Medusa began life as a beautiful mortal, who bragged of being more attractive than the goddess Athena. One day, while in Athenas temple, Medusa was ravished by the sea god Neptune. In revenge, Athena turned Medusa into a Gorgon. Her long, silky hair was transformed into snakes and she was no longer able to look at the men who came to court her, as they would turn to stone if they looked into her eyes. Medusa was eventually killed by Perseus with help from Athena and Hermes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library depicts the legendary Medusa, a prominent figure in Greek mythology. Once a stunning mortal who dared to claim her beauty surpassed that of the goddess Athena, Medusa's fate took a tragic turn. While seeking refuge in Athena's temple, she fell victim to Neptune, the sea god, who ravished her against her will. In an act of vengeance, Athena transformed Medusa into a fearsome Gorgon. The image showcases Medusa's striking transformation; her once lustrous locks have been replaced by writhing snakes that now adorn her head. This metamorphosis robbed her of the ability to gaze upon any man without turning him instantly into stone—a petrifying power that became synonymous with this mythical creature. However, Medusa's story does not end there. With assistance from Athena and Hermes, Perseus ultimately triumphed over this formidable female monster and brought about her demise. Through this mesmerizing visual representation captured by Science Photo Library, we are transported into the realm of ancient myths and legends. It serves as a reminder of the enduring power these stories hold and their significance in shaping our understanding of human nature and morality throughout history.
