Meadow grasshopper, SEM
Meadow grasshopper. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a male meadow grasshopper (Chorthippus parallelus). This is a member of the grasshopper family Acrididae. This grasshopper is easily sexed: the hind end curves upwards in the male (as seen here), and continues on a level in the female. Its greatly enlarged rear legs allow it to make prodigious leaps to escape from predators. The familiar buzzing song of the grasshopper is produced by the rapid motion of its hooked hind legs over its wings. This grasshopper, as its name suggests, inhabits grasslands, and feeds on the grasses amongst which it lives. Magnification: x2 at 5x7cm size. x5 at 5x7 inch size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a male meadow grasshopper, captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Belonging to the Acrididae family, this particular species is known as Chorthippus parallelus. The distinguishing feature of this grasshopper lies in its hind end, which curves upwards in males while remaining level in females. The enlarged rear legs of this agile creature enable it to execute remarkable leaps, allowing for quick escapes from potential predators. Additionally, these hooked hind legs play an essential role in producing the familiar buzzing song associated with grasshoppers. By rapidly moving their legs over their wings, they create a distinct sound that resonates throughout meadows and grasslands. As suggested by its name, the meadow grasshopper thrives amidst vast expanses of lush greenery and primarily feeds on the surrounding grasses. This micrograph offers us a glimpse into the world of these fascinating creatures that contribute to the vibrant tapestry of nature. With magnification at x2 for 5x7cm prints and x5 for 5x7 inch prints, Science Photo Library has beautifully captured every minute detail of this mesmerizing insect specimen. Whether you are interested in wildlife or simply appreciate the wonders found within our natural world, this print serves as a testament to both scientific exploration and artistic expression.
