Mating green tree frogs

A breeding aggregation of Phyllomedusa trinitatis, the Trinidad leaf frog, or green tree frog. This species is found on the Caribbean island of Trinidad & in South America. Nocturnal creatures, they live in trees & bushes surrounding ponds. The female (centre) is 90mm long; the males, four of which are seen here, are smaller at 80mm. Breeding occurs at the start of the rainy season in June. Aggregations form when there is a shortage of females. Females lay eggs in nests of leaves folded into tubes, positioned above a pond. When the eggs hatch the larvae fall into the water & develop as tadpoles. Adult tree frogs feed on large insects, including crickets & moths

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing moment in the life of mating green tree frogs, also known as Phyllomedusa trinitatis or Trinidad leaf frogs. Found on the Caribbean island of Trinidad and in parts of South America, these nocturnal creatures thrive in the lush trees and bushes surrounding ponds. At the center of this image is a female frog measuring 90mm long, while four smaller males surround her at 80mm each. Breeding for this species occurs during June's rainy season when aggregations form due to a scarcity of females. Females lay their eggs in nests made from folded leaves positioned above a pond. Once hatched, the tiny larvae fall into the water and begin their transformation into tadpoles. It is truly remarkable how nature orchestrates such intricate life cycles. These adult tree frogs sustain themselves by feeding on large insects like crickets and moths, showcasing their vital role within their ecosystem as efficient predators. This stunning photograph not only highlights the beauty and diversity found in our natural world but also serves as a reminder of how delicate ecosystems can be. Let us cherish these incredible creatures and strive to protect them for generations to come.
