Marsoulas cave painting replica C013 / 7411
Marsoulas cave painting replica. This is a replica of one of the prehistoric cave paintings in the Great Hall of the Buffalo, discovered in the Marsoulas cave in the French Pyrenees. The paintings date from around 12, 000 years ago, at the time of the early modern human Magdalenian culture. Animals depicted here include bison, ibexes, deer and horses. The cave has been closed to the public to prevent damage, and these replicas, by the artists Gilles Tosello and Alain Dalis, are displayed in the prehistoric visitors centre in Tarascon-sur-Ariege

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Marsoulas cave painting replica C013/7411, a faithful reproduction of one of the prehistoric cave paintings found in the Great Hall of the Buffalo within the Marsoulas cave in the French Pyrenees. Dating back approximately 12,000 years to the Magdalenian culture, these ancient artworks provide a glimpse into early modern human civilization. The replica faithfully captures intricate details of various animals that once roamed these lands during that time period. Among them are majestic bison, graceful ibexes, elegant deer, and swift horses. These lifelike depictions offer valuable insights into both animal fauna and Stone Age anthropology. Due to preservation concerns, access to the original cave has been restricted to protect its fragile environment. However, visitors can still marvel at these remarkable replicas created by talented artists Gilles Tosello and Alain Dalis at Tarascon-sur-Ariege's prehistoric visitors center. Stepping into this European museum transports you back in time as you explore an anthropological treasure trove from our distant past. The exhibition immerses you in a world where paleontology meets history and palaeolithic art comes alive through vivid pictograms. This photograph taken by Philippe Psaila for Science Photo Library encapsulates not only France's rich cultural heritage but also highlights humanity's enduring fascination with our prehistoric origins. It serves as a reminder that even in the 21st century, we continue to uncover new chapters of our collective story through anthropological and palaeontological discoveries like those found within Marsoulas Cave.
