Magnesium ribbons

Magnesium. Strips of the reactive metallic element magnesium (Mg). The strip at left is tarnished and appears darker. This is due to the formation of magnesium oxide (MgO) on its surface as the metal reacts with the oxygen and water in the air. The strip at right has been cleaned to reveal the shiny surface of the pure metal. If left exposed to the air, this strip will tarnish and appear like the other strip. The reactivity of magnesium leads to its use as a sacrificial metal to prevent other metals from corroding. It is a light metal with major uses in lightweight alloys and castings. It is mostly obtained from sea water. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © ANDREW LAMBERT PHOTOGRAPHY/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases two magnesium ribbons, highlighting the reactive nature of this metallic element. The strip on the left appears darker and tarnished due to the formation of magnesium oxide (MgO) on its surface as it reacts with oxygen and water in the air. In contrast, the strip on the right has been meticulously cleaned, revealing a shiny surface that represents pure metal. However, if left exposed to the air, even this clean strip will eventually tarnish and resemble its counterpart. This reactivity is precisely why magnesium is often used as a sacrificial metal to prevent other metals from corroding. Magnesium is not only known for its propensity to oxidize but also for being a lightweight material with significant applications in alloys and castings. Interestingly, most of our supply of this valuable element comes from sea water. This thought-provoking image reminds us of both the beauty and complexity found within chemistry. It serves as a visual testament to how elements can transform when exposed to their surroundings – showcasing oxidation at play while simultaneously capturing our curiosity about these fundamental building blocks of matter.
