It is thought she drowned in mud while crossing a river. Her carcass is 85cm high and 130cm from trunk to tail and weighed 50kg. The preservation of the body is remarkable, with skin, hair, eyes and internal organs essentially intact. Woolly mammoths became extinct about 10, 000 years ago. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the incredible preservation of Lyuba, a baby woolly mammoth who lived approximately 40,000 years ago. Found in the Arctic region of Russia, this female calf met her untimely demise at just one month old, believed to have drowned in mud while crossing a river. Despite the passage of time, Lyuba's carcass remains astonishingly intact. Measuring 85cm high and 130cm from trunk to tail, weighing around 50kg, she is a testament to the wonders of nature's frozen embrace. Every detail has been remarkably preserved - her skin, hair, eyes, and even internal organs are still discernible. This remarkable find provides invaluable insights into the life and biology of these ancient creatures. Woolly mammoths roamed our planet during the Ice Age but sadly became extinct roughly 10,000 years ago. The discovery of Lyuba offers scientists an unprecedented opportunity to study these majestic beings up close and unravel their evolutionary mysteries. The photograph itself showcases Lyuba's mummified form against a horizontal backdrop. It serves as a poignant reminder of Earth's rich history and highlights humanity's ongoing fascination with paleontology. Captured by Science Photo Library in May 2007 after being stumbled upon by a hunter on the Yamal Peninsula; this image stands as an enduring symbol of scientific curiosity and exploration.
