Louis-Jacques Thenard, French chemist

Louis-Jacques Thenard (1777-1857), French chemist. Thenard, the son of a peasant, made his fortune by discovering Thenards blue, a pigment that could withstand the heat of a furnace in porcelain production. It consisted of the fusion of cobalt oxide and aluminium oxide. Thenard also discovered hydrogen peroxide in 1818. He spent much time collaborating with his friend Joseph Gay-Lussac on the studies of the alkali metals of sodium and potassium. Engraving from Vies des Savants Illustres (1875)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving from the 19th century showcases Louis-Jacques Thenard, a remarkable French chemist whose contributions to the field were truly groundbreaking. Born into a humble peasant family, Thenard's brilliance and relentless pursuit of knowledge led him to discover several significant scientific advancements. One of his most notable achievements was the creation of "Thenards blue" an extraordinary pigment that revolutionized porcelain production. This innovative fusion of cobalt oxide and aluminium oxide possessed unparalleled heat resistance, enabling its use in furnaces without losing its vibrant color. Such a breakthrough propelled Thenard to great success and wealth. In addition to this remarkable discovery, Thenard also played an instrumental role in identifying hydrogen peroxide in 1818. Collaborating closely with his friend Joseph Gay-Lussac, he dedicated considerable time studying alkali metals like sodium and potassium. This monochrome illustration beautifully captures the essence of this visionary scientist who left an indelible mark on chemistry history. With his piercing gaze and determined expression, Louis-Jacques Thenard stands as a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance. His pioneering work continues to inspire generations of researchers worldwide.
