Louis Agassiz, US-Swiss palaeontologist
Louis Agassiz (1807-1873), Swiss-American palaeontologist. Jean Louis Rodolphe Agassiz was born and worked in Switzerland until 1846, when he left for the USA. He produced a catalogue of fossil fish from Brazil in 1829, and completed an extensive history of European fish in 1842. After this he completed a pioneering five-volume work on fossil fish in 1843. Outside the field of ichthyology, Agassiz was the first to discover the Ice Ages. His research on glaciers led him to conclude that ice sheets advanced and retreated over Europe and North America. He was also a leading critic of Darwins evolution theories

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned Louis Agassiz, a distinguished US-Swiss palaeontologist whose contributions to the field of natural history are immeasurable. Born as Jean Louis Rodolphe Agassiz in Switzerland, he later embarked on an extraordinary journey that led him to the United States in 1846. Agassiz's expertise in ichthyology is evident through his remarkable accomplishments. In 1829, he compiled a comprehensive catalogue of fossil fish from Brazil and followed it up with an extensive study on European fish in 1842. The pinnacle of his work came with the groundbreaking publication of a pioneering five-volume series on fossil fish in 1843. However, Agassiz's influence extended far beyond ichthyology. He made significant strides in understanding Earth's history by becoming the first person to discover evidence of Ice Ages. Through meticulous research on glaciers, he deduced that massive ice sheets had advanced and retreated across Europe and North America over time. Notably, Agassiz was also recognized as a prominent critic of Charles Darwin's evolutionary theories during his lifetime. His intellectual prowess allowed him to challenge prevailing ideas while contributing valuable insights to various scientific disciplines. This monochrome portrait captures Louis Agassiz's profound dedication to uncovering nature's mysteries and leaves us awe-inspired by his immense legacy as both a biologist and palaeontologist. Science Photo Library has beautifully preserved this historical image for all enthusiasts of science and history alike.
