Lope de Vega, Spanish playwright

Lope de Vega (1562-1635), Spanish playwright. Also known as Felix Lope de Vega Carpio. Lopes works, along with those of Cervantes, form a major part of Spanish literature. His phenomenal output included around 2, 500 plays, of which 425 have survived. Born in Madrid, Lope was reading Spanish and Latin by the age of five. During an adventurous youth, including scandals and love affairs, periods of exile, and service in the army and navy, he lived in places such as Valencia and Toledo before returning to Madrid in 1595. Earlier, in 1588, he had sailed in the Spanish Armada on its failed invasion of England. In later life, his writings took on religious overtones, and in 1614 he joined the priesthood. His plays include El perro del hortelano (The Dog in the Manger) and La viuda de Valencia (The Widow from Valencia). 19th-century engraving

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Spanish playwright, Lope de Vega. Born in Madrid in 1562, Lope's literary contributions alongside Cervantes have left an indelible mark on Spanish literature. Renowned for his astonishing productivity, he penned approximately 2,500 plays during his lifetime, with a remarkable 425 surviving to this day. Lope's early intellectual prowess is evident as he was already fluent in both Spanish and Latin by the tender age of five. His adventurous youth was filled with scandalous love affairs, periods of exile, and service in the army and navy. Living in various cities such as Valencia and Toledo broadened his perspective before ultimately returning to Madrid in 1595. Notably, Lope sailed aboard the ill-fated Spanish Armada during its failed invasion of England in 1588. As time passed, his writings took on religious undertones leading him to join the priesthood in 1614. Amongst his vast repertoire of plays are notable works like "El perro del hortelano" (The Dog in the Manger) and "La viuda de Valencia" (The Widow from Valencia). This exquisite engraving from the 19th century captures Lope de Vega's essence as a key figure within European literature history. A true luminary of Renaissance Spain, this monochrome portrait immortalizes Lope de Vega's legacy as a Caucasian man who shaped not only Spanish but also European culture through his profound contributions to theater and literature.
