Locust internal anatomy, light micrograph

Locust internal anatomy. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the gut and part of the male reproductive system of the locust. At right is the locust gut in the region of the ileum, which is surrounded by five small tubes, the Malpighian tubules, that filter out nitrogenous waste and pass it to the gut. At left are parts of the male reproductive system, which consist of six hollow tubes (the accessory glands, dark purple) surrounding a central pink tubule (the ejaculatory duct). Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres across

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate internal anatomy of a locust, providing a glimpse into its fascinating reproductive and excretory systems. In this light micrograph, we are presented with a transverse section that reveals both the gut and part of the male reproductive system. On the right side of the image, we observe the locust gut in the region of the ileum. Encircling it are five small tubes known as Malpighian tubules. These remarkable structures play a crucial role in filtering out nitrogenous waste from the locust's body and transporting it to be eliminated through its gut. Moving towards the left side, our attention is drawn to an intriguing arrangement of six hollow tubes surrounding a central pink tubule. These components form parts of the male reproductive system. The dark purple coloration represents accessory glands while their central counterpart is identified as an ejaculatory duct. With a magnification factor of x14 when printed at 10 centimeters across, this stunning photograph allows us to appreciate nature's intricate design on such a minuscule scale. It serves as a testament to both biology enthusiasts and those fascinated by wild life photography alike.
