LM of a dog flea, Ctenocephalides canis
Dog flea. Light micrograph of an adult female dog flea, Ctenocephalides canis. The helmet-like head (at right) bears a row of combs called ctenidia; these and spines on the body help to anchor the flea in the fur of its host. The eyes are photo- sensitive spots. Below the eyes are blood-sucking mouthparts. The body is flattened laterally so that it is higher than wide, designed for quick movement through the fur. A third pair of legs are elongated and well developed for leaping on and off the host. Only the adult flea is parasitic, feeding on the blood of dogs; the young larvae feed on dead plant or animal matter. Magnification: x19 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x33 at 4x5 inch size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a dog flea, Ctenocephalides canis. The light micrograph reveals the fascinating features of an adult female flea in stunning clarity. At first glance, one cannot help but notice the helmet-like head adorned with a row of combs known as ctenidia. These specialized structures, along with spines on its body, serve as anchors that firmly secure the flea within its host's fur. The eyes of this tiny creature are not only striking but also highly sensitive to light. Positioned just below them are blood-sucking mouthparts, essential for nourishment and survival. With a laterally flattened body shape, higher than it is wide, this agile insect is perfectly adapted for swift movement through its furry habitat. A remarkable attribute lies in its elongated third pair of legs which enable astonishing leaps onto and off from their hosts. It is important to note that only adult fleas engage in parasitic behavior by feeding on dogs' blood; meanwhile, young larvae sustain themselves by consuming decaying plant or animal matter. With magnification ranging from x19 at 6x7cm size to x33 at 4x5 inch size, this photograph allows us to appreciate the intricacies of nature up close and personal. Science Photo Library has once again captured an awe-inspiring moment from the wild world of zoology and entomology – reminding us how even seemingly insignificant creatures play vital roles within our ecosystem.
