LM of Brugia malayi, worm causing human filariasis

Brugia malayi. Light micrograph of many parasitic nematode worms (Brugia malayi), cause of human lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis). The gut can be seen in these small transparent worms. Brugia malayi is one of five types of nematode worm which cause human filariasis. They are spread by blood- sucking insects. The worms then invade the human lymphatic system to produce thousands of larvae that spread around the body. Repeated infection causes lymph vessels to become inflamed and fluid to accumulate, which can lead to an enormous enlargement of parts of the body (elephantiasis). Treatment is usually with anthelmintic drugs. Magnification: x40 at 35mm size

Nematoda Nematode Round Worm Worm Elephantiasis Light Micrograph

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate world of Brugia malayi, a parasitic nematode worm responsible for human filariasis. In this light micrograph, we are granted a glimpse into the transparent bodies of these small worms, revealing their delicate gut structures. Brugia malayi is one among five types of nematode worms that cause lymphatic filariasis in humans, commonly known as elephantiasis due to its characteristic symptom - extreme enlargement of body parts. The life cycle begins when blood-sucking insects transmit these worms to humans. Once inside the body, they invade the lymphatic system and reproduce rapidly, producing countless larvae that disperse throughout various organs. Repeated infections lead to inflammation and fluid accumulation in lymph vessels, resulting in grotesque swelling seen in elephantiasis. Thankfully, treatment options exist for those affected by this debilitating condition. Anthelmintic drugs are typically employed to combat the infestation caused by Brugia malayi and other similar parasites. This extraordinary image serves as a reminder of nature's complexity and highlights the importance of scientific research aimed at understanding and combating diseases like filariasis. It also underscores how crucial it is to protect ourselves from blood-sucking insects that serve as vectors for such harmful organisms.
