LM of blood smear showing iron-deficiency anaemia

Iron-deficiency anaemia. Light micrograph of a blood smear in a patient suffering from iron- deficiency anaemia. This is the most common form of anaemia worldwide. It is caused by a deficiency of iron, an essential component of the blood pigment haemoglobin. Here, a field of red blood cells (spherical structures) is seen. Due to this form of anaemia these cells stain poorly (they are hypochromic). Many of the cells are irregularly shaped and smaller than normal. This reduces their oxygen-carrying capacity. Symptoms include tired- ness, dizziness, and pale skin. A white blood cell (at centre, purple) serves to fight infection. Giemsa stain. Magnification: x630 at 35mm size

Anaemia Blood Blood Smear Deficiency Iron Stain Condition Disorder Health Care Light Micrograph

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a light micrograph of a blood smear, revealing the effects of iron-deficiency anaemia. This condition, which is the most prevalent form of anaemia worldwide, occurs when there is an insufficient amount of iron in the body. Iron plays a crucial role as an essential component of haemoglobin, the pigment responsible for carrying oxygen in our blood. In this image, we observe a field filled with red blood cells, appearing spherical in shape. However, due to the presence of iron-deficiency anaemia, these cells exhibit poor staining properties and are hypochromic. Additionally, many cells display irregular shapes and smaller sizes than normal. Consequently, their ability to transport oxygen efficiently becomes compromised. The symptoms associated with this disorder include tiredness, dizziness, and pale skin tone – all consequences of reduced oxygen-carrying capacity within the bloodstream. Amidst this sea of red blood cells lies a lone white blood cell at the center; its purpose is to combat infections that may arise. Through Giemsa stain technology and magnified at x630 under 35mm size conditions, this photograph provides valuable insights into iron deficiency anaemia's impact on our health and highlights its significance within medical science research.
