LM of biogenic silica in horsetail

Light micrograph of a section of the horsetail Equisetum arvensis showing internal deposits of silica (the yellow features). This biogenic silica is taken up in solution from the surrounding soil and then distributed throughout the plant, in sites such as the cell walls, in amorphous (non- crystalline) form. Its function may be to provide structural support since the cell walls of this primitive plant are quite thin and non-lignified. If the soft tissues are removed using acid then a fragile, skeletal structure of silica remains virtually intact. The plant used to be called scouring rush because of the abrasive qualities of its fibres. Magnification: x400 at 35mm size

Equisetum Arvense Horsetail Pteridophyte Pteridophytes Silica Light Micrograph

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a light micrograph of a section from the horsetail plant, Equisetum arvensis. The image reveals fascinating internal deposits of biogenic silica, depicted as vibrant yellow features throughout the plant. Biogenic silica is absorbed by the horsetail from its surrounding soil and then distributed within the plant, predominantly in amorphous (non-crystalline) form. This unique substance serves a crucial role in providing structural support to this primitive plant species, compensating for its thin and non-lignified cell walls. Remarkably, if one were to remove the soft tissues using acid treatment, what remains is an incredibly delicate skeletal structure composed entirely of silica. It is no wonder that this remarkable plant was once referred to as "scouring rush" due to the abrasive qualities of its fibres. Captured at 400 times magnification on a 35mm size scale, this mesmerizing photograph offers us an intimate glimpse into nature's intricate design. With its focus on biogenic silica in horsetail plants, it sheds light on the remarkable adaptations found within pteridophytes like Equisetum arvensis. This stunning visual representation not only highlights scientific curiosity but also celebrates the beauty and complexity inherent in our natural world.
