Liquidambar fossil leaf. Rock containing a fossilised specimen of a leaf from the plant Liquidambar europaeum. The specimen measures 6 by 8 centimetres. Liquidambar plants first appeared in the Cretaceous and several species are still extant today. This specimen was part of the flora found in the region around Saint-Marcel d Ardeche and Theziers in the Rhone Valley in southern France. It dates from around 5 million years ago during the Pliocene when the climate was warmer. This specimen is part of the Depape collection of the Science Faculty at Lille Catholic University, Lille, France

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable fossil leaf from the plant Liquidambar europaeum, known as Liquidambar. The leaf specimen, measuring 6 by 8 centimetres, is beautifully preserved within a rock formation. Liquidambar plants have been around since the Cretaceous period and continue to thrive today with various species. Discovered in the region surrounding Saint-Marcel d'Ardeche and Theziers in the Rhone Valley of southern France, this particular fossil dates back approximately 5 million years ago during the Pliocene era when temperatures were notably warmer. It offers us a glimpse into an ancient ecosystem that existed long before our time. Part of the esteemed Depape collection housed at Lille Catholic University's Science Faculty in Lille, France, this specimen holds immense scientific value. Its intricate details provide valuable insights into botanical history and paleontology. The black background enhances the contrast between the delicate leaf structure and its rocky surroundings, creating a visually striking composition. This studio shot captures every minute detail with precision and clarity. As we admire this single fossilized leaf suspended in time, it serves as a testament to Earth's rich biological past. Through careful study and analysis by experts at Lille Catholic University's Science Faculty, we can unravel more mysteries about prehistoric life forms and gain deeper understanding of our planet's evolution over millions of years.
