Lily beetles mating

Lily beetles (Lilioceris lilii) mating on a lily leaf (Lilium Casablanca ). This pest was originally from Asia. It was first recorded in the UK in 1940, in southern England. It has been gradually spreading northwards and westwards and is becoming a common pest of gardens. The female lays 200-300 eggs in early summer, mainly on lilies, but also on fritillaries, Nomocharis and Solomons seal (Polygonatum sp.). The larvae eat the foliage and cause severe damage

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a rare moment in the wild, as two Lily beetles engage in a delicate act of mating on a vibrant lily leaf. Originating from Asia, these pests made their way to the United Kingdom in 1940 and have since been steadily spreading across gardens throughout the country. The female Lily beetle lays an impressive number of eggs, ranging between 200-300 during early summer. While lilies are their preferred choice for egg-laying, they also target fritillaries, Nomocharis, and Solomons seal plants. Unfortunately, their voracious larvae feed on foliage and cause significant damage to these beautiful plants. In this image captured by Science Photo Library, we witness the intricate dance of reproduction within the insect world. The male and female Lily beetles come together in perfect harmony amidst nature's backdrop. This snapshot not only showcases their biological process but also highlights the diverse fauna found within British landscapes. With its focus on botany and zoology, this photograph serves as a reminder of how entwined our natural world truly is. It offers us an opportunity to appreciate both the beauty and complexity that exists within even the smallest creatures around us—underscoring why it is crucial to protect our ecosystems from invasive species like these resilient Lily beetles.
