Lightning near Tucson, USA

Lightning. Night-time view of multiple bolts of lightning striking mountains. Lightning occurs when a large, electrical charge builds up in a cloud. This is probably due to the rapid movement of water droplets and ice particles within the cloud. Large thunderclouds generally have very turbulent interiors. The charge induces an opposite charge on the ground, and a few " leader electrons" travel to the ground. When one makes contact, there is a huge backflow of energy up the path of the electron. This produces a bright flash of light and temperatures of up to 30, 000 degrees celsius. Photographed near Tucson, Arizona, USA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing power of nature as bolts of lightning illuminate the night sky near Tucson, USA. The majestic mountains serve as a dramatic backdrop to this awe-inspiring display of electrical energy. Lightning, a result of an immense electrical charge building up within a cloud, is brought to life in this image. The turbulent interiors of large thunderclouds create the perfect conditions for lightning to occur. As water droplets and ice particles rapidly move within the cloud, an opposite charge is induced on the ground below. This sets off a chain reaction where "leader electrons" travel towards the ground until one makes contact. When that connection is made, an incredible surge of energy travels back up along the path of the electron, resulting in a brilliant flash and temperatures reaching up to 30,000 degrees Celsius. It's truly astonishing how such natural phenomena can generate such intense heat and light. Photographed in Arizona's picturesque landscape near Tucson, this photograph showcases not only the raw power but also the beauty found within storms. It serves as a reminder that our planet holds countless wonders waiting to be explored and understood through meteorology and scientific inquiry. This remarkable image from Science Photo Library invites us to appreciate both the magnificence and complexity of weather patterns while reminding us never to underestimate Mother Nature's ability to captivate us with her displays of natural forces like lightning strikes against mountainous horizons.
