Liana stem, light micrograph
Liana stem. Polarised light micrograph of a transverse section through the stem of a Brazilian liana, or woody vine. The tissues within this stem have differentiated to form many secondary stem-like structures within the primary stem. Each stem-like structure consists of an outer ring of sclerenchyma (yellow) enclosing secondary phloem (yellow and blue) and xylem (yellow and red) vessels, which transport carbohydrates and water around the plant respectively. Between the stem-like structures are soft parenchyma cells (dark blue). Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres wide
